What You Need to Know About Wedding Vendor Reviews | Shopping

Today I’ve got an exciting topic for you, Nearly-weds: wedding vendor reviews! Odds are you’ve probably gone to websites such as WeddingWire or The Knot and started searching for your vendors. But how do you know which vendors to pick?
You might be a couple who uses the reviews on these sites as a guide, looking for testimonials and stories that are positive and exactly what you’re looking for. But are all positive reviews legit? Are there things you should be looking for that you don’t know about?
Fear not! I’m here with the 411 on all the things you need to know about wedding vendor reviews!

FOUR THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT VENDOR REVIEWS
-
All Positive Reviews
While seeing all positive reviews can be reassuring, something to keep in mind when reading through is: do the reviews sound genuine? Are they actually clients who are reviewing, or are they so syrupy sweet that it seems like the vendor’s best friend or grandmother wrote it? Look for experiences, how the vendor maybe saved the day when a real-life problem popped up. If there’s a four-star review, or maybe even a three in there, it shows that the reviews are likely real, and that the wedding vendor is human. Don’t take a less-than-five-star review as a bad thing; perhaps there was a learning experience that the vendor took away from the event, and will be even better because of it on your day!
-
Responses to Reviews
See if the wedding vendor responds to their reviews. Responses are a good sign of a vendor working hard to promote themselves and show appreciation to their clients when they leave a review – positive or negative! These vendors have taken the time to read through all the feedback so they can further improve their services. Note, however, that vendors who pay to advertise with some wedding websites are unable to respond to reviews.
-
Quality over Quantity
Quality of vendor reviews is key. Maybe there are only 15 reviews for a vendor but they’re all glowing and paint the perfect picture of what to expect on your wedding day. This is much more useful than 300 five-star reviews with absolutely no feedback or description. This begs the question, “Where did these reviews come from? Were these generic five-star reviews added by the vendors’ acquaintances, or did that many clients truly leave a short one-click review?”
-
Negative Reviews
This probably goes without saying, but if you see vendors with quite a few (or possibly all) negative reviews, buyer beware! From negative comments about not receiving photos or videos in a timely manner to a vendor arriving late to the wedding, these are all things you want to look for. Spending a little more on a vendor with genuine positive reviews can end up way less painful than a cheaper vendor with even a handful of bad reviews. You’ll thank yourself in the end for reading all those vendor reviews!

HOW TO SPOT FAKE VENDOR REVIEWS
When reading wedding vendor reviews, keep an eye out for mention of a date, venue, and/or vendor name. Specific details make it more likely the wedding actually took place and gives the review more validity.
If a review talks about how wonderful an individual is and doesn’t detail anything about what that person did for the event, this could be a fake review. For example: “Joe is the best DJ in Orlando. He plays the best songs and knows how to work a crowd. We think Joe is amazing and no other DJ compares.”
Ideally, you should be looking for: “Joe was our DJ at the Swan and Dolphin for our wedding this past May. He was so amazing and got every one of our guests on the dance floor. He was so attentive to us, making sure that our parents were in the room for parent dances, and even saved the day when our ceremony got moved indoors. We truly can’t thank him enough for everything he did for us!”
Sometimes couples will even include photos with their vendor reviews – even better!

CHECK AND DOUBLE-CHECK
Don’t stop at one wedding website when looking for reviews. There are so many reputable sites, such as WeddingWire, The Knot, Google, Yelp, and more. Look around to make sure all the sites match review-wise and see if there are any responses on the reviews.
