Are you planning a last minute wedding? Well don’t worry…you’re not alone! Plenty of couples find themselves in situations where waiting the typical six months to a year in order to say “I Do” just isn’t feasible.

From selecting wedding venues to hiring vendors to spreading out payments, having several months to plan a wedding is certainly helpful. However, there’s no steadfast rule that engagements have to last any great length of time. If you find yourself planning a last minute wedding, rest assured that you’ve got this!

Incorporate these eight insider tips and your last minute wedding is sure to be fabulous!

8 Tips for Planning a Last Minute Wedding

Establishing your budget and identifying where funds are coming from is the first step for every newly engaged couple. Especially for couples with a short engagement window, identifying who (if anyone) is contributing to the wedding and how much they are gifting needs to be addressed right from the start.

Due to the condensed timeline, transparency in this department is key. Establish not only how much someone plans to gift but if their contribution can be used as you wish or if it’s intended to pay for something specific. Also, make sure to sit down and establish a schedule for all payments and deposits, including those coming from outside sources. This will allow you to move forward quickly, and efficiently prioritize how you plan to allocate these funds.

Once the budget is established, you and your partner need to sit down and discuss your wedding priorities. What do you envision when you close your eyes and transport yourself to your wedding day? For example, is the ceremony closest to your heart? Then your wedding location might take priority over anything else. In the case of a last minute wedding, you might set the day and time of your event based off of your preferred venue’s availability.

Establish priorities that are the most important to you two on your special day. Remember that if everything is important, then nothing is important. Identifying your must-have’s and deal breakers will allow you and your future spouse the opportunity to allocate your funds in the manner that speaks to you. It also will allow you to see opportunities where you can save and those avenues that require you to splurge. When you don’t have the luxury of time, having your priorities in line will help when making quick or difficult decisions.

When planning a last minute wedding, it can be difficult to find traditional venues with availability during peak weekends and seasons. PRO TIP: be open to alternative days and times! If your dream venue is a top priority on your list of must-haves, ask about weekday options or even Sundays. Many venues offer discounts on less popular days and times.

There’s no rule that weddings have to take place on a Saturday evening, and if your heart is set on a specific venue, be open to a different day of the week or ceremony start time. If you’re set on a Saturday evening ceremony, then starting your venue search with that in mind will help narrow down potential options right away.

For brides, finding a wedding dress can feel like one of the most difficult parts of planning a last minute wedding. Don’t worry! Finding your dream dress is possible if you’re willing to be open, flexible, and creative.

Start by contacting your local bridal salons and ask if they carry any designers that offer expedited services. Check sales racks for ready-to-wear items and ask if they’re willing to sell any current floor or sample dresses at a discounted price. Yes, these items may have some minimal imperfections or signs of wear, but with a good seamstress, just about anything can be altered to perfection!

If you’re limited to online shopping, make sure you order from reputable sites. You don’t have time for low quality or counterfeit items. Do yourself a favor and read reviews prior to purchasing. Trusted companies like BHLDN and David’s Bridal offer wedding dresses that ship relatively quickly and offer a wide variety of sizes, styles, and selections, allowing you to easily find something that fits your personal style.

Another option is to hit up department stores. Many carry evening wear including elegant white dresses. In reality, a wedding dress is any dress a bride chooses to wear to her wedding, so don’t be afraid to get creative in your dress search!

When it comes to hiring vendors, start by addressing if a wedding planner is in your budget. Particularly with a last minute wedding, having a professional planner who is knowledgeable and well-versed in the industry will help tremendously in keeping your event on task! Not only will a planner make sure every T is crossed and I is dotted, their relationships with vendors in the industry will be invaluable in negotiating last minute contracts and scouring for availability.

If a wedding planner is not in your budget, there are things you can do on your own. Do your research prior to your initial vendor meetings, and figure out what you like and don’t like as well as your vision for your day. Come prepared to consultations with images and examples of your goal and be very transparent about your budget.

After establishing where and when your wedding will be held, inform your guests about your fast approaching nuptials. Jump on a call with anyone who will have to travel so they can get a head start on travel arrangements. Do your guests a favor and help iron out as many accommodation details as possible.

If you can, secure a room block at a moderately priced hotel so that out-of-town guests don’t have to scramble to find last minute vacancy. Establish a wedding website or social media outlet to keep guests informed and act as a central source of up-to-date wedding information. Most importantly, remember to be understanding. Planning a last minute wedding may mean that not everyone will be able to attend.

Weddings come with a never-ending number of details and tasks. Delegate! Enlist the help of your wedding party and family members. Don’t try to do everything yourself. There are plenty of tasks that you don’t need to have your hand in, such as stuffing invitation envelopes, making place cards and menu cards, putting together favors, etc. Your friends and family are there to support you on this milestone, so chances are they’re more than willing to lend a hand!

A great way to keep yourself from feeling overwhelmed is by using a wedding checklist broken down by month, week, or even day. Breaking your tasks up into manageable segments will make them less daunting. You can download our free wedding planning checklist here.

Once you’ve committed to a decision for your wedding, stop looking! Pinterest and other inspiration sources, while full of wonderful inspiration, can quickly become overwhelming. Believe in your vision and have confidence in the decisions you make. Your last minute wedding is going to be everything you dreamed!
