Wedding Goals All Engaged Couples Should Make | Planner to Planning

I’ve been a wedding planner long enough to know that there are important wedding goals all engaged couples should make. What better time of year to set such goals than at New Year’s?

Every year, I strive to make (and keep!) my New Year’s resolutions. This year is an exceptionally special year to make resolutions, as it’s the year I’m getting married! Okay, let’s get to it:

MY WEDDING GOALS

  • Stay Positive. This is something I struggle with. It’s easy to think “why me” when sitting in traffic, or when the grocery bag breaks and spills its contents all over the sidewalk. I want to change my thinking when these things happen. Something unplanned is bound to happen on my wedding day, but if I keep the thought that “I am marrying the love of my life” and “I get to spend the day with my loved ones,” I’m bound to keep the positivity rolling throughout the year!
  • Slim Down for the Gown. While I love my wedding dress and the fact that it is a zip-right-up fit, it was still a little snug at my last fitting. I vow to get some extra walks in, pick the salad over the pizza, and try to make more healthy choices to help that dress fit perfectly. Not only is this good for my big day, but I look forward to being more in shape to run around on-site with my clients and be stronger to handle any task that comes my way!
  • Take a Moment to Slow Down. One tip of advice I got from my fantastic DJ, Jim O’Neill, for my wedding day was to have someone tap me on the shoulder each hour of my wedding day to say, “Hey, it’s 2 o’clock.” At that time, I’ll take in what’s happening – who’s around me, what I’m doing, what the moment feels, smells, and tastes like. The feeling of slowing down and taking things in sounds like the perfect way to remember my special day. I already have my Maid of Honor on this task! Using this throughout the rest of the year will only help me remember the little moments in life, and we all know those are the most important.
  • Be More Present. I find myself in the car with my fiancé, Jonathan, looking at my phone, the both of us silent. I really want to work on being more disconnected from devices and more connected to my life. On my wedding day especially, I plan to be unplugged and invite my guests to be present during our ceremony. No phones and cameras, just eyes and ears to celebrate our love that day.
  • Worry Less. With all the wedding expenses, the expectations, and worrying about how my guests will feel during our wedding weekend, I find myself worrying and overthinking my wedding planning. This is our time to enjoy and I need to remind myself about that. At the end of the day, no one will remember what my veil looked like for the 30 minutes I wore it during ceremony, or what we put in the welcome bags for our guests, or what color napkin was on their lap during dinner. If I can remind myself to stop worrying about these little things, I am confident I will enjoy the coming year all the more!

WEDDING GOALS FOR OTHER ENGAGED COUPLES

My goals are personal to me, but I hope they might also help some of you! A few other wedding goals I suggest you make:

Weddin Goals (Jasmine Wallace Carter)

  • Delegate. You don’t have to do everything yourself! Rely on your family and your wedding party to help you get through your planning tasks.
  • Table any disagreements. Wedding planning causes a lot of stress. It’s not worth straining your relationship! If you find yourselves at an impasse, set the topic aside and focus on something else.
  • Set (and stick to) a budget. This should be your very first wedding planning step! I’ve had some struggles with this myself, so trust me when I say that having a budget and sticking to it will make your planning – and your life – easier.
  • Go on dates. Your lives will revolve around wedding planning for the foreseeable future. Schedule dates with each other where you vow not to discuss the wedding or anything related to it. Use these chances to reconnect and remind yourselves why you’re doing all the planning in the first place!
