Here at Just Marry!, we love keeping on top of the hottest wedding trends! Sadly, not every trend is beloved by the masses. Today we thought we’d review some of the trends we’re seeing that are raising some eyebrows around the country.
- The groom paying for the bouquet. On the rise is a trend where the groom selects and pays for his bride’s wedding bouquet. While some brides find this an incredibly romantic and personal gesture, others are appalled at the very thought.
- Naked cakes. Over the past couple of years, naked caked have grown as a trend. These cakes leave all of the layers exposed and unadorned by frosting. Some brides adore this sort of shabby-chic look, while others complain that it looks half-finished.
- No parents’ processional. As the average age of brides and grooms goes up, the tradition of having parents process goes down. We’re seeing more 30+ couples who are having all parents sit with the rest of their guests, largely so they can avoid any drama that comes with setting the processional order.
- Risqué bridal party photos. We’ve discussed the trend of bridal parties baring their underwear in professional wedding photos, but we’ve also seen a rise in bridesmaids’ boudoir photo shoots. Some couples are embracing the edginess of this style of photography, while others call it tasteless and inappropriate.
- Trashing the dress. This has been a trend for years, and it continues to be controversial. Many brides can’t imagine spending so much time and money on the perfect wedding gown only to trash it after the wedding for a photo shoot, while others think it’s a better idea than having the gown sit in a closet for decades to come.
- Changing gowns. While this isn’t necessarily a trend, controversy does arise when a bride chooses to change her gown between the ceremony and reception. The gown is traditionally meant to be worn throughout the event, and that is how some couples justify the expense. Some brides want more distinction and movability during their receptions, though, and find traditional wedding gowns a hindrance in that respect.
- White bridesmaids’ dresses. The moment Pippa Middleton was captured in photos wearing a white bridesmaid’s gown, she started a trend. Some brides love the romantic and soft all-white look, while others can’t abide the thought of wearing the same color as their bridal party.
- Nontraditional wedding music. Couples are getting bolder in their music selections. Gone are the days of classical wedding songs. We’ve seen couples walk up the aisle to everything from “Marry Me” by Jason Mraz to “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC. This just tells us that classical and traditional isn’t for everyone!
