Non-Traditional Wedding Vows: Where to Find Inspiration | Organizing

Nearly-weds, are you planning to have non-traditional wedding vows for your wedding ceremony? Many of our clients opt for more modern wedding vows that include poetry and songs in addition to (or rather than) scripture.  I think this is a lovely personal touch to any wedding ceremony.

Writing non-traditional wedding vows may seem like a really challenging thing to do on top of all of your other wedding planning tasks, but if you want a ceremony that’s really personal and reflects your relationship, I think you’ll find it well-worth the effort.  Below are my tips for coming up with the perfect wedding vows for you!

DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE

I know you’ve got a million and ten things to do to prepare for your wedding, but DO NOT put off writing your wedding vows until the last minute. Once the last thirty days before your wedding start ticking down, you’ll be too overwhelmed to do it. I suggest starting at least ninety days before your wedding date with the goal of having the vows completely written sixty days prior to the wedding.

USE PERSONAL SOURCES TO GET INSPIRED

Do the two of you have a favorite movie, a favorite play, a favorite song, or a favorite book? These are all great places to find inspiration for your wedding vows. Reminiscing about things that happened while you were dating can also be a fun starting point for writing your vows.

WRITE EVERY IDEA DOWN

Don’t edit yourself while you’re brainstorming. Let your mind wander and write everything down. If you’re driving, record a voice memo. You never know when inspiration will strike and you don’t want to lose anything brilliant!

DON’T WORRY ABOUT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE MIGHT SAY

When couples talk to me about writing their vows, I often hear them say they’re afraid of embarrassing themselves in front of their family and friends. I say if you keep it clean (or maybe not…I don’t know you and your guests!), nothing you say from the heart should be embarrassing. These vows are about you and your relationship. There’s no reason for anyone to judge your words.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

When you say your vows to each other, you want them to be smooth. The best way to make sure that happens is to practice. You don’t have to memorize them word-for-word; in fact, I suggest becoming familiar with the ideas in the vows so you can relax and speak from the heart on the wedding day.
