Nearly-weds, let’s talk about how to use a wedding cost checklist! What’s the number one thing that stresses you out about wedding planning? For the majority of my sweet couples, it’s setting and sticking to a budget.

Let’s be honest…budgeting isn’t the most exciting part of wedding planning. It IS essential, though. I fully believe that doing it right will help make your planning less stressful and even—dare I say it?—fun!

Let’s get into more about how to use this important wedding planning tool.

WHAT IS A WEDDING COST CHECKLIST?

A wedding cost checklist is a great tool to prioritize the wedding services that are most important to you and your future spouse. Here at Just Marry!, we send all of our Full Service planning couples our wedding cost checklist to help establish their budgets. We use this tool to set the foundation for all of their future wedding plans…and you should too!

Not only is the wedding cost checklist broken down into ten wedding planning categories, including things like Ceremony, Reception, and Flowers, but each category lists products and services that fall under each one, like Venue, Catering, Bar, Bouquets, and more.

HOW DO I USE THE CHECKLIST?

To use this tool, rank the ten major planning categories from 1 to 10, with number one being the category that is most important to you and number ten being the least important.

Then, under each category, check off the products and services that interest you (it’s totally okay to leave some of the boxes unchecked!). After that’s done, you should work with your planner to allocate your funds towards each category and the services within the categories.

Keep in mind that the checklist is fluid, so if you overspend in one category, you’ll need to take money from another category to stay on track!

WHAT ARE THE AVERAGE WEDDING COSTS?

To give you a better picture of an average wedding cost breakdown, check out what couples typically spent in 2018 in some key categories:

  • Venue Rental: $2,000 - $3,000
  • Catering: $70 - $100 per person (not including taxes and service fees)
  • DJ: $1,200 - $1,500
  • Floral/Décor: $2,500 - $4,000
  • Hair & Makeup: $200 - $400

The most important thing when completing your wedding cost checklist is to be honest with yourselves! Can you really afford a horse and carriage to make your ceremony grand entrance, or all-peony bouquets for you and your bridesmaids? It is absolutely possible to stay within your wedding budget, but you should start on the right foot and set a budget that is realistic for you.
