#1 - Set your budget

To kick things off, Event Manager Shannon Jones offered this helpful advice for newly engaged couples: “Set a budget first and foremost! There are a lot of costs involved when planning a wedding, so set a budget and a timeline to help you save for all the things that will make your day perfect.”

BONUS TIP: Narrow down your guest count! The fewer guests you invite, the more your budget will stretch.

#2 – Prioritize your services

Seconding Shannon’s tip, company president Susan Southerland advised, “Your two first steps before you do anything else should be deciding on your priorities and setting a budget. Once you know how much money you have to spend and what’s most important to you to spend it on, you will eliminate a lot of your planning stress!

Start with your top priority. If you want a particular photographer and they’re on the high end of your budget, look to your lower priorities and make sure you spend less on those or eliminate them entirely. If you want a high-end venue with expensive food and beverage, reduce your guest count so it becomes more affordable. (Just be aware of minimum expenditures that some venues require!)”

#3 - Take some time to celebrate

Sometimes newly engaged couples jump so quickly into their wedding planning that they neglect to just celebrate being engaged. Senior Event Manager Leanna McDonald suggested, “Enjoy your engagement! Host a fun themed engagement party, get engagement photos done, and enjoy regular date nights as a newly engaged couple.”

#4 - Hire a wedding planner

This wedding planning tip might seem self-aggrandizing coming from a team of wedding planners, but if you want a stress-free planning experience, this is a sure way to do it! The right wedding planner will not only help keep your planning on track every step of the way, they will offer you budget saving tips, often paying for themselves through their connections.

As Senior Event Manager Danielle Palmer shared, “Hire a planner early on. Planners are a great resource to help with venue and vendor recommendations! They will help you gather information, compare venues, negotiate vendor contracts, and keep all the details organized. On the day, they will have everything set for you so you can relax and enjoy!”

#5 - Create a wedding website

Event Manager Ellis McRee offered this helpful wedding planning tip: “A wedding website is a handy way to showcase all the details about your event in one place for your guests. It’s also a fun way to introduce your wedding party, share your love story, and show off those cute engagement photos!”

#6 - Book your venue early on

Event Manager Kristen Chavez advised, “Book your venue at the start of your planning. The date that you book with your venue will help you narrow down your vendors and help you shape a timeline for tasks leading up to your day!”

#7 - Remember the day is about YOU

“Everyone around you is going to try to offer their advice and opinions during your planning,” newlywed and Senior Event Manager Jessica Van Heyde said. “It is an exciting time, and everyone just wants to help! Just be sure that at the end of the day, you only do what is best for YOU and your future spouse, because your wedding is just about the two of you!

#8 - Keep track of everything

Another one of our team’s top wedding planning tips comes from Event Manager Mairead Murray, who said, “Stay organized! Keep a spreadsheet of which vendors are/aren’t booked, your budget, guest list, guests meal choices, etc. Be sure to keep your wedding planner in the loop every step of the way so they can execute everything perfectly on the wedding day!”

#9 - Don't be afraid to stray from tradition

Wedding traditions have their place, but if you’re a nontraditional couple, don’t be afraid to reflect that in your wedding choices! Choosing a destination wedding or having a micro wedding, for example, is both trendy and practical for many of today’s couples. Having a Man of Honor or Best Woman in your wedding party is another fun possibility. From your wedding attire to your venue, there are many ways to make your wedding your own!
