TIP #1 – HIGHLIGHTS TO INCLUDE

When drafting save the date wording for a destination wedding, think of it like a pre-invitation. Below is the traditional information you can’t miss, but destination weddings require more details. Add your wedding website if you have one, include any accommodations you’ve already contracted for your guests’ stay or a list of nearby hotels, a list of area attractions and things to do, and a general timeline of the weekend’s events.

TIP #2 – TRADITIONAL SAVE THE DATE WORDING

The actual style and save the date wording is up to your personal preference. You might want to base the design off your wedding colors and theme, or you and your fiancé(e) as a couple. Regardless of the look you choose, these are the elements you want to make sure you include:

  • The words “Save the Date”. Seems self-explanatory, but still worth mentioning!
  • The wedding date
  • Your names. Either first and last or just first…it’s up to you!
  • The wedding location. I recommend including the city and state (or country); however, if you feel like including the actual venue and have the room, feel free to do so.
  • Additional helpful information. This is where to include your wedding website, accommodations, area attractions, etc.
  • The words “Formal Invitation to Follow”.

TIP #3 – WHAT NOT TO INCLUDE

You know your guests best and will likely know what you should or shouldn’t include in your destination wedding save the date wording. If you aren’t sure, here are a few things you really don’t need to include:

  • Ceremony & Reception Start Times & Locations. This will be shared on your wedding website as well as on the formal invitation.
  • Dress Code Information
  • RSVPs
  • Your wedding registry details. This should only be listed on your wedding website and/or on any shower invitations you might have. Never include registry information on your save the dates or invitations.
  • Guest meal selections

TIP #4 – WHO TO SEND THEM TO

Send save the dates to anyone you intend to invite to your wedding, even if you already have a verbal confirmation from them. Keep in mind, only send them to those you definitely want to attend! Be sure to address them specifically to everyone you want invited. For example, anyone who is married or in a serious relationship and your wedding party should be offered a plus one.

TIP #5 – TIME THEM RIGHT

Typically, save the dates are sent out around six months prior to the wedding. With a destination wedding, however, there are more logistics for guests to organize. They’ll need to make their travel arrangements, book accommodations, request time off work, and possibly even plan a mini vacation! So it’s better to give them more time to plan. Between eight and nine months before the wedding is the sweet spot for sending destination wedding save the dates.
