Unexpected Things We’ve Had to Do as Wedding Planners

Wedding Planning

We at Just Marry! are so fortunate to work with a wide array of talented and reliable wedding vendors. When we book packages for our couples, we make sure to hire those vendors so that the couple’s big day goes as smoothly as possible. And, hey…it makes our jobs easier, too!

Sometimes, though, we have no control over the vendors hired by our clients. This works out in many cases, but when it doesn’t we’re often called on to perform some tasks that typically fall outside of our responsibilities. Here are some of the most memorably unexpected things we’ve had to do as wedding planners:

  • Architect. We’ve built impromptu bases for ceremony tables to keep them from blowing over in the wind, bolstered stage stairs when we were worried they might collapse, and fixed faltering arches that somehow lost hardware while being assembled.
  • Babysitter. We’ve fed babies their bottles to help quiet their fussing, held onto diaper bags during ceremonies, coaxed resistant child attendants down the aisle, and kept numerous children from running into nearby bodies of water.
  • Beautician. We’ve painted nails or applied artificial nails, done makeup, cut hair, and even created a hairpiece.
  • Cobbler. We’ve scuffed up shoe soles to prevent sliding, used Super Glue, hot glue, or Duct Tape to fix broken heels, and punched holes in sandal straps with a corkscrew to make shoes fit.
  • Crafter. We’ve created backing for picture frames that were supposed to have them but didn’t, we’ve improvised on DIY projects that had pieces missing, and we’ve created place cards to mimic the ones brought by the couple when some were overlooked.
  • Emcee. We’ve announced the reception formalities and directed the reception events when the couple didn’t hire a DJ because no one knew what to do.
  • Florist. We’ve put together more missing or broken boutonnieres and corsages than we can count, wrapped DIY bouquet stems with ribbon, incorporated elements brought by the bride into her bouquet, and even recreated all of a couple’s wedding floral when it was accidentally frozen in a storage cooler.
  • Landscaper. We’ve picked up dog poop, chased away pesky snakes, and trimmed a few stray pieces of grass near the aisle that a bride wanted removed.
  • Magicians. We’ve moved entire weddings outside after a rain storm in less than ten minutes, completely reordered processionals on the fly when a key wedding party member became ill, and gone on food runs to rescue starving wedding parties who didn’t get the pre-wedding snacks they expected.
  • Officiant. We’ve performed wedding ceremonies and helped couples write their vows.
  • Recruiter. We’ve found vendors of just about every kind when one didn’t show up.
  • Referee. We’ve dealt with unruly or intoxicated family members and/or wedding party attendants, calmed arguments before they got out of hand, and even kept a mother of the groom from the bride because they didn’t get along.
  • Security Guard. We’ve had to (gently) remove a guest for wearing white when the bride refused to walk down the aisle unless the guest left, and we’ve had to keep watch for potential wedding crashers during celebrity weddings.
  • Wardrobe Stylist. We’ve sewn clothes, fixed jewelry, created a garter, and stuffed shoes to make them fit.
