Venue & Catering

Topping most wedding budgets is the venue fee and catering costs, which often go hand in hand. Your venue site fees inclusive of your catering will likely total around $18,000, with food and beverage averaging around $70-120 person (before service fees and taxes, of course!).

Photography & Videography

Among the highest priority for every couple is a wedding photographer, which averages at about $2,700 for ceremony and reception coverage. Videographers average about $2,000. These are the wedding vendors who will capture your beautiful memories on the day, so you don’t want to cut any corners here!

Depending on who you hire for an officiant, you should budget around $285 for your officiant. Some couples might have a local church official or even a family member or friend perform the ceremony instead. This service can also be a gift to the couple paid for by a friend or family member.

Music & Entertainment

Options for ceremony music range from live musicians to DJs. This service averages about $800. To keep the party going into reception, a DJ will run about $1,300, while a band will be closer to $4,300. Whatever you decide, this is a worthy investment for every wedding. You want to be sure your guests will have fun dancing the night away!

Wedding Stationery

Your wedding invitations will average about $400. You might also decide to invest in Save the Dates, wedding programs, menus, and other stationery elements that tie into your wedding theme, which will bump that number of significantly.

Wardrobe & Accessories

We can’t forget about your wardrobe when breaking down how much a wedding costs! A wedding dress averages $1,700, but accessories and shoes must be considered on top of this to the tune of about $200. Groom’s attire is generally around $300, and hair and makeup for the bride around $225. You’ll want to look sharp in your fancy threads on your big day, so these budget line items are a must!

Floral & Décor

Another big wedding budget item is your personal floral and décor, averaging around $2,500. Couples who choose venues already decorated (such as around the holidays) can reduce this cost. Having a smaller wedding party with less floral to purchase will cut this line item, as well.

There are other things to consider when getting into how much a wedding costs. These budget line items often go overlooked, especially early in the planning process:

  • Wedding favors $250

Average based on one per guest.

  • Rehearsal dinner $1,300

Typically includes close family, your wedding party, and their dates. Sometimes might include out of town guests.

  • Gown steaming/suit pressing $200

Pricing will vary based upon the style and fabric of the garments. Steaming of finger-tip veils are typically included in the fee, but cathedral-length may incur an up-charge.

  • Gown alterations $150

Pricing will vary based upon the design of the gown and the complexity of the alterations.

  • Bridal party hair & makeup $150 per person
  • Transportation $800
  • Bar & Bartending fees $20 per person
  • Gratuities $25-$100 per vendor

Amount will vary based upon the length of time a vendor has worked with you prior to the wedding, the number of hours they are on site, and how well you feel they performed their job.

  • Vendor meals $25

Typically, vendors who will be on site for your wedding for 4+ hours will require a vendor meal. Ask your caterer about special pricing for these.

Trim the guest list

Brides.com says the average wedding guest count is 167. When you have that many mouths to feed, your wedding costs are going to skyrocket! One budget-saving tip I share with all my couples is to trim down the guest list.

Go all-inclusive

You might also want to consider an all-inclusive venue, meaning one that offers décor, catering, rentals, and more as part of their fee. It may seem scary at first seeing one lump sum, but broken down, the costs are typically average to below average. Because the venue packages everything together, they can offer a discount!

Invest in a professional wedding planner

The number one piece of advice I can give you is to invest in the services of a professional wedding planner. Wondering why I’m mentioning this when discussing how much a wedding costs? Get ready, because I’m about to let you in on a big secret!

When you work with a professional planner, they often get discounted rates for vendor services since they work so often with vendors and create packages with their services. Even if you don’t book a package, ask your wedding planner about budget and contract negotiation assistance. Your planner can be your second pair of eyes on your contracts, track your budget, and even negotiate costs with your vendors. Your planner will know if there is a vendor charging more than average, or if they have extra fluff thrown into their services that you may not want or need.

I can’t stress it enough: use your wedding planner’s knowledge and connections! You’d be amazed how often a professional planner pays for him or herself.
