Are you thinking about hiring a wedding planner? If so, listen up! I’ve got an inside scoop for you.

No matter where you are in your wedding planning, you might be wondering, “Is a wedding planner worth it?” or “What exactly does a wedding planner do?” These are GREAT questions, and I’ve got the answers!

Today I’m sharing everything you should know about working with professional wedding planners, such as what type of planner you need, typical pricing, and the service inclusions you should be looking for. I’ll even throw in the questions you should ask before hiring a wedding planner.

#1 – Do I really need a one?

With all of the planning resources and DIY options out there these days, you might be wondering if hiring a wedding planner makes sense. We understand! On the surface, planning services might rank lower on your budget priority list.

But consider this: most wedding planners pay for themselves through their connections with wedding venues and vendors who offer their clients discounts! On top of that, do you really want to be worrying about how everything is going to come together on the wedding day? Having a friend or family member fill this role means they won’t get to fully enjoy and experience this joyous occasion with you. That alone makes having a wedding planner truly invaluable!

#2 - What type of wedding planner should you hire?

The biggest thing to understand when hiring a wedding planner is there are varying levels of services. There are wedding planners who coordinate just the ceremony, those who coordinate the ceremony and reception, and Full Service wedding planners who are there every step of the way with you. Let’s break down each one!

  • Ceremony Only Wedding Planners

    Most Ceremony Only planners begin working with their clients 30 to 60 days before the wedding to create a ceremony agenda. They are on site on the wedding day to oversee the setup of your ceremony, liaise with your wedding vendors, greet and guide your guests to the ceremony site, line up the wedding party, cue the music, and make sure everyone gets down the aisle. These wedding planners typically assist with your post-ceremony photos and depart shortly thereafter.

  • Day-of Wedding Planners

    Most Day-of planners begin working with their clients at least 90 days before the wedding to create a detailed agenda of the wedding day. They handle everything mentioned above, and also oversee the setup of your reception, help with reception introductions, make sure your formalities happen on time, communicate with all the vendors and catering team throughout the event, and are there for anything you may need. Some Day-of planners stay until your meal is served before departing. Others will be there through the end of the night. INSIDER TIP: if your planner stays until the end of the event, they take care of packing up all your personal items at the end of the night. That alone makes it worth upgrading their services!

  • Full Service Wedding Planners

    Full Service planners begin working with their clients the moment a contract is signed and partner with them throughout their planning. Their services include everything above and so much more! Full Service planners are with you for every appointment, they handle your budget tracking and contract negotiation, they guide you on design and theme, and are essentially your “right-hand man” for anything you may need. They typically even run errands, schedule appointments, and track RSVP’s. They’ve got you covered from start to finish!

#3 – How involved and accessible will your wedding planner be?

When hiring a wedding planner, keep in mind that not all planners offer the same amount of communication and meetings within the scope of their services. It’s important to check on each planner’s inclusions to see how much time he or she will spend with you before the wedding day. Ask how many meetings are included, how much contact to expect from them, and what time they typically include on the wedding day. When planning the most important day of your life, you want to make sure you have someone you can go to whenever you need something!

#4 – How much experience and knowledge do they have?

#5 – What is the average fee?

Depending upon the amount of time you’ll work with the planner on your pre-planning and on the wedding day, ceremony planning services average between $500-$1,000. Ceremony and reception coordination (Day-of planning) is typically between $1,250-$2,000. Full Service Planning typically starts around $4,000 and above, again depending on the services you need.
