Elopements and Micro Weddings: Why It’s the Perfect Time to Have One | The Insider

There has been so much talk about micro weddings recently that we just had to chime in. After all, our team has been planning elopements and micro weddings for more than twenty years! What’s with all the hype now?

The answer to that question can be summed up in one word: COVID.

The recent COVID-19 outbreak threw a huge wrench into the wedding industry. Some industry experts say that it will permanently change the way we approach weddings. They just might be right!

Our team has seen the wedding landscape shifting in this direction for years. It’s one reason Just Marry! specializes in intimate destination weddings, which are really just a form of micro wedding. Elopements are another specialty of ours, and one we’ve been seeing more frequently over the past couple years.

Whether or not you initially envisioned an elopement or micro wedding when you got engaged, you just might end up having one. Read on to learn why now is the best time to do so!

An elopement is a wedding that typically includes only the couple, though more modern elopements might also include the couple’s children or a couple of guests. Elopements are generally not planned far in advance. We often have couples decide to elope while they’re here in Orlando for vacation, for example!

A micro wedding is much like you would think of a traditional wedding, but with 50 or less guests. Couples still typically plan micro weddings about 12 months in advance. They also usually include most of the same wedding traditions and services of larger weddings, just on a smaller scale.

The pros and cons of eloping or hosting a micro wedding are quite similar. Let’s hit the big ones.

  • It's cheaper

Let’s face it…weddings are expensive! Eloping can be done for a fraction of the cost even if you account for travel. Similarly, micro weddings include less guests, meaning you have fewer people to feed (and pay for).

  • It's easier

With companies like ours offering inclusive elopement packages and intimate wedding packages, planning elopements and micro weddings is such a breeze! Plus, the smaller your wedding guest list, the less stressful it is to make planning decisions.

  • It's safer

Once upon a time, this would have been the furthest thing from anyone’s mind when it came to wedding planning. Now, we have to be aware of the number of guests collected in one place and how to keep them all safe. Less guests means less chance to spread illness.

  • It's more versatile

The smaller your wedding, the more creative you can get with where you host it and what elements you want to include. Many of our micro wedding couples choose to venture over to the Disney parks for fireworks viewing parties, for example.

  • It's less celebratory

Eloping, in particular, removes the festive group celebration that is such a huge part of wedding culture. Micro weddings can have this same result. You might feel that a nearly empty dance floor is no way to celebrate a wedding, for example. Many couples are choosing to add fun and unique entertainment to their micro weddings for this very reason!

  • It's touchy

Elopements and micro weddings are likely to result in at least one person being unhappy because they weren’t invited. It’s important to make your intentions clear from the beginning if you don’t plan on having a large wedding where you invite everyone you know.

The timing couldn’t be better to plan an elopement or micro wedding! Venues are reopening, but they’re doing so for restricted numbers of guests. Many people are experiencing financial changes, making lower-budget weddings a necessity. Nearly everyone has online access and the ability to watch live-streamed events if they can’t physically attend. All wonderful reasons to consider one of these options!

If you’re engaged and your initial wedding plans have been disrupted by COVID-19, an elopement or micro wedding could be the ideal solution. After all, the world is going through this together. Your guests will understand that you’ve had to adapt your wedding plans accordingly. In the end, all that matters is celebrating your love the best way you can and beginning your new life together!
