Budget Brides: Expect to Spend the Most on These 6 Things | Shopping

Are you one of those savvy budget brides (or grooms) trying to keep your expenses under control? Maybe you’re just starting your planning and don’t know where to begin when it comes to budgeting. Rest assured, I’m here to help!

Today I’m sharing the scoop on the most essential big-budget items that you’ll want to account for when figuring out how much you’re going to spend on your wedding. From your venue to your food to your wedding attire, there are plenty of must-haves you need to fit into your wedding budget. Let’s dig a little deeper into each of them!

#1 - Your Wedding Food & Beverage

Let’s start with the meat and potatoes—literally—of your budget! Your wedding food and beverage (or F&B in the event biz) is likely going to be your biggest expense. This, of course, depends on your guest count, meal selections, and bar packages. On average, your reception site including food and beverage will come in just under $16,000.

Budget brides and grooms can count on F&B being one of their highest costs. It’s always helpful to over-budget when it comes to your guest count and F&B expenditures. If you come in under-budget, great! Add that special dessert station or splurge on that second dress!

#2 - Your Wedding Gown(s)

Speaking of second dresses, if you’re a couple looking to purchase one or more wedding gowns for your big day, this is another big-budget item to keep in mind. Lots of budget brides buy “off the rack” for discounted prices or shop during a trunk show featuring their favorite designers to save money, which is never a bad idea.

When it comes to wedding attire in general, the items that often sneak up on couples are alterations, accessories, undergarments, and shoes. Pad that wardrobe budget with a little extra so you can account for these things.

#3 - The Entertainment

Around here, we say your entertainment can make or break your event, so it’s always good to be careful when cutting back on expenses when it comes to entertainment. Your band or DJ is going to keep your event flow going, keep your guests dancing the night away, and will announce you into your reception…all important tasks!

Although these things may seem priceless, on average couples should budget about $4,500 for a band and $1,300 for a DJ. For add-ons like additional pieces to the band, lighting packages, custom gobos, etc., budget brides and grooms should include a little extra in their wedding budget.

#4 - Photography & Videography

Photography and videography are two other big-budget wedding services you won’t want to overlook. Spending an average of $2,700 for photography and $2,100 for videography is typical for many couples, so budget accordingly. After all, these vendors will capture all the memories for your special day!

The number of hours of coverage will play a big part in the cost for these services. Consider everything you want captured, such as getting ready footage and photos, reception toasts and sunset photos during reception, etc. so you can budget for an appropriate number of hours. Budget brides and grooms might want to skip some of the earlier activities and only capture the beginning of their reception to keep costs down, so do what works best for you!

#5 - Your Floral & Decor

Some creative budget brides with a knack for DIY may be able to cut costs a bit in this category, but on average, couples spend about $2,500 on their wedding floral. When you begin adding additional tables for guests (which means extra centerpieces!) and floral for each member of your 12-person wedding party, this budget category can increase quickly! To stay on target in this budget category, consider repurposing items, using candles versus flowers, and choosing cost-effective floral.

Pro Tip: If you’re thinking about taking on some wedding DIY, be sure to read this post first. Some projects are more worth investing in than others!

#6 - Venue Site Fees

Rental fees for the ceremony and reception spaces can also take up a large portion of your wedding budget, but they’re critical elements to include! The key here is to find out what’s included in your rental fee, such as tables, chairs, linens, décor elements, or other items that you could tick off of your list in other categories. Venues with inclusive rental and site fees can help budget brides and grooms find the perfect location within the price range they were hoping for!
