Do’s and Don’ts for Planning a Wedding in Today’s High-Tech World

In a previous blog post, we shared a video of a man proposing to his girlfriend with the aid of a drone. Since the advent of YouTube and smartphones, the idea of filming and sharing videos has become more of the norm than not, which means we’re seeing more and more filmed proposals. In fact, we’re seeing many aspects of weddings impacted by today’s technology.

This recent article by TheKnot.com provides a list of “techy commandments,” which we found inspirational. With technology at your fingertips, it can be hard to know the do’s and don’ts of including it in your wedding. Let’s cover some of them, including a few mentioned by The Knot:

Do:

–        Use apps and websites to track important items, such as your appointment calendar, to-do list, budget, RSVPs, and payment deadlines.

–        Take advantage of reviews on websites and social media to learn more about the wedding vendors in your community…and leave reviews after your event to help future couples.

–        Create inspiration boards on Pinterest to share with your wedding vendors.

–        Learn more about what wedding services cost by reading blogs and other online resources meant to help prepare you for realistic budgeting.

–        Find support and advice from other couples in online communities.

–        Consider live-streaming your ceremony, especially if you’re a destination couple.

–        Feel free to ask guests to use a special hashtag when they post about your wedding so you can go back and find their social media posts later.

–        Sign up for photo-sharing through a site such as Flickr, Imgur, Photobucket, etc.

Don’t:

–        Tech-out your stationery by sending electronic save the dates, invitations, or thank-you notes. Snail mail is still the more tasteful and personal route.

–        Save pics of your gown on your phone. There’s always a chance your future spouse could accidentally see them. Instead, ask a parent or wedding attendant to take the photos.

–        Bypass the professional photographer in lieu of iPhone camera pics.

–        Buy your wedding gown from a non-reputable site. Make sure to read the fine print about returns and alterations.

–        Vent on social media.

–        Allow guests to ruin your wedding pictures by getting in the photographer’s frame while trying to use their smartphones as cameras.

–        Don’t download every wedding photo you have onto social media, clogging up Facebook streams…instead, use a photo-sharing site like we mentioned above.

While we live in a wonderful age with tech at our fingertips, it doesn’t always belong in a wedding. If you follow these tips, you’ll be well on your way to a fun and carefree event!
